Macau fails to secure a win in the second round of the Table Tennis World Cups

Macau’s athletes, Mak Tin Ian and Leong On Na, were eliminated from contention for qualification at the 2026 ITTF Macau World Table Tennis Championships after suffering further defeats on the second day of the group stage, on a day when the competition once again drew attention at the Galaxy Arena

Macau’s athletes, Mak Tin Ian and Leong On Na, suffered another defeat on the second day of the group stage of the ITTF (International Table Tennis Federation) 2026 Macau Men’s and Women’s World Cups, effectively ending their chances of advancing in the competition.

In the men’s competition, Mak Tin Ian lost 0-3 to Denmark’s Anders Lind, while in the women’s competition, Leong On Na was defeated by Egypt’s Hana Goda by the same score. With these losses, both Macau representatives are now out of the knockout stage.

Today’s action also featured several standout matches at the Galaxy Arena, with victories by top names in world table tennis such as Wang Chuqin, Truls Moregard, and Hugo Calderano in the men’s competition, and Qin Yuxuan, Doo Hoi Kem, and Sofia Polcanova in the women’s.

In the men’s competition, world No. 1 Wang Chuqin easily defeated Romania’s Eduard Ionescu 3-0. Sweden’s Truls Moregard edged out South Korea’s Park Ganghyeon 3-1, while Brazil’s Hugo Calderano, the defending champion, defeated the Czech Republic’s Lubomir Jancarik 3-0 as well. There was, however, a surprise with the defeat of China’s Liang Jingkun by Argentina’s Horacio Cifuentes, 2-3.

In the women’s competition, Hongkonger Doo Hoi Kem defeated Poland’s Natalia Bajor 3-2, while Qin Yuxuan benefited from the withdrawal due to injury of Germany’s Annett Kaufmann.

The group stage concludes today, April 1, with several decisive matches for qualification to the next round. Among the featured matches are the showdowns between Wang Chuqin and Finn Luu, Liang Jingkun and Dimitrij Ovtcharov, and Zhou Qihao and Patrick Franziska.

The World Cups, organized with the support of the Sports Institute and World Table Tennis Management Group Limited, continue to generate strong public interest in Macau, with tickets virtually sold out since sales began.
