Iraq claimed the final available place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Bolivia 2–1 in the intercontinental playoff.
The Iraqi side triumphed in Monterrey, Mexico, with goals from forward Ali Al-Hamadi in the 10th minute and striker Aymen Hussein in the 53rd minute.
Bolivia, aiming for their fourth World Cup appearance and first in 32 years, had equalized in the 38th minute through forward Moisés Paniagua.

With this victory, Iraq will compete in the World Cup finals for only the second time, 40 years after their debut at the 1986 FIFA World Cup, where they were eliminated after three defeats.
At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Iraq will be placed in Group I alongside France, Senegal, and Norway.
The 23rd edition of the tournament will take place from June 11 to July 19, featuring 48 teams.
