Roberto Martínez said the main goal of Portugal’s March training camp is to prepare for the FIFA World Cup 2026, downplaying the importance of recent friendly results.

Portugal faced Mexico national football team in a goalless draw and will next take on the United States men’s national soccer team, but Martínez stressed that winning is not the priority at this stage.

“Our focus is not on beating Mexico or the United States, but on preparing for the World Cup and defining our final squad,” the coach said during a press conference in Atlanta.

Despite the 0-0 draw against Mexico, Martínez expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting the players’ personality, responsibility, and execution. However, he acknowledged the need for adjustments, particularly improving presence in the opponent’s box and decision-making in the final third.

The Spanish coach also dismissed any anxiety among players competing for a spot in the World Cup squad, emphasizing professionalism and a healthy competitive environment within the group.

Looking ahead to the match against the United States, Martínez warned against underestimating the hosts, coached by Mauricio Pochettino, noting their aggression and technical quality despite a recent 5-2 loss to Belgium national football team.

Portugal will train at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where the match against the United States is scheduled. The venue is home to the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United FC.

The 2026 World Cup, to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, will see Portugal compete in Group K alongside Uzbekistan, Colombia, and a yet-to-be-determined opponent from an intercontinental playoff.
