AFCON 2025: Senegal government demands investigation into corruption suspicions at CAF

CAF decided to punish Senegal over incidents during the final, namely the players briefly abandoning the pitch in protest at a penalty awarded to Morocco

The Senegalese government today demanded the opening of an international inquiry “into suspicions of corruption in the governing bodies of the Confederation of African Football (CAF),” following the stripping of the AFCON 2025 title.

“Senegal categorically rejects this unjustified attempt at expropriation,” said government spokeswoman Marie Rose Khady Fatou Faye, describing CAF’s measures as “especially serious” and “illegal.”

The statement comes a day after CAF stripped Senegal of the Africa Cup of Nations title, which they had won in the January 18 final in Rabat against Morocco — a match surrounded by controversy.

CAF decided to punish Senegal over incidents during the final, namely the players briefly abandoning the pitch in protest at a penalty awarded to Morocco, which Brahim Díaz subsequently missed. In extra time, Pape Gueye scored the only goal to give Senegal a rare final victory against the host nation.

The Senegalese Football Federation announced today it will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, while the government said it will also pursue the matter through international courts and is calling for an international investigation.
