Portugal: the “first-lady blue” chosen by Margarida Maldonado Freitas on arrival day at Belém

Margarida Maldonado Freitas made clear that "there are no first ladies in this country"

Following in the footsteps of US first ladies Jackie Kennedy, Melania Trump and Jill Biden, and France’s Brigitte Macron, Margarida Maldonado Freitas — wife of new president of the Republic António José Seguro — also chose blue for her husband’s inauguration. A historic choice, even as she made clear that being “first lady” is not in her plans and that she intends to prioritise her professional life while Seguro serves as head of state.

Margarida Maldonado Freitas made clear that “there are no first ladies in this country,” and her husband, the newly inaugurated president of the Republic António José Seguro, declared that he would respect his wife’s decision to continue her professional life as a manager and pharmacist rather than take on the formality of a role that is not defined in law in Portugal.
