Google announced on Wednesday that it had shut down operations of a state-linked Chinese cyber-piracy group that compromised at least 53 organizations in 42 countries. The group, identified as UNC2814 (also known as “Gallium”), had been operating for nearly a decade, primarily targeting governments and telecommunications companies.
According to John Hultquist, chief analyst of Google’s Threat Intelligence Group, cited by Reuters, the operation revealed “a vast surveillance apparatus used to spy on people and organizations around the world.”
