Caracas formally requested the meeting to address the “criminal aggression” by the United States that occurred in the early hours of Saturday. Other countries, including Iran and Colombia, also supported Venezuela’s request.
The meeting takes place on the same day that Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, detained at a detention center in New York, will appear in a Manhattan court. Maduro is accused of narcoterrorism and weapons possession. The federal court for the Southern District of Manhattan confirmed on Sunday that the hearing is scheduled for 12:00 local time.
The international community is divided between condemning the U.S. attack on Caracas and expressing support for Maduro’s ousting; UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that Washington’s military action could have “concerning implications” for the region.
Hours after the attack, on Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States would govern Venezuela until a transition of power is completed and suggested a second offensive against the country if necessary.
On Sunday, Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro’s vice president, was confirmed as interim president, shortly after which Trump threatened her, stating that she “will pay more than Maduro” if she “doesn’t do what she must.”
