Satellite casino era ends as Casino Landmark shuts down in Macau

Casino Landmark, Macau’s last remaining satellite casino, ceased operations at 11:59 p.m. on December 30th, bringing to a close the city’s three-year transition period for satellite gaming venues and marking the end of a decades-old operating model.

The casino, located inside the New Orient Landmark Hotel on the Macau peninsula, operated under the gaming license of SJM Holdings. Its closure formally ends the satellite casino system, under which third-party venues ran gaming operations using the licenses of concessionaires.

The final minutes of operation drew a crowd of local residents, gamblers and employees who gathered to witness the shutdown. Some visitors made a special trip to bid farewell to the venue, while others livestreamed the moment on social media as the casino’s signage was covered with red cloth.

Inside the property, notices were posted reminding patrons to arrange the redemption of gaming chips. The scene remained orderly throughout the evening, with no reported disruptions.

According to the local media reports, several gamblers said the closure had long been expected, following regulatory changes introduced in recent years to tighten oversight of Macau’s gaming sector. Under the revised framework, satellite casinos were required to either close, convert to directly operated properties, or complete their transition by the end of the three-year grace period.

SJM Holdings has said that all locally hired employees at Casino Landmark will remain with the group and be reassigned to other SJM-operated casinos, subject to operational needs.
