Japan to Restart Part of World’s Largest Nuclear Power Plant

Japan’s Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) announced plans to partially restart the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant in January, marking a significant step in the country’s gradual return to nuclear energy.

The facility, the world’s largest nuclear power station by capacity, has remained offline for years due to safety concerns that intensified after the 2011 Fukushima disaster. Regulators recently approved enhanced security measures at the site.

TEPCO said the restart is part of efforts to stabilize energy supplies, curb carbon emissions and reduce Japan’s reliance on imported fossil fuels amid rising electricity costs.

Public opinion remains divided, with local residents and opposition groups expressing ongoing concerns about safety and emergency preparedness, despite assurances from the government and plant operators.
