Xi Jinping stated that the Palestinian issue “affects international fairness and justice” and represents “a test of the effectiveness of the global governance system,” according to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In a message sent for a UN meeting on Tuesday, the Chinese leader emphasized that the international community must “assume responsibilities, correct historical injustices, and uphold justice.”
On the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, Xi underscored that any post-war framework must respect “the will of the Palestinian people” and address the legitimate concerns of regional countries.
The Chinese leader insisted that efforts should be “anchored in the two-state solution” to achieve a “comprehensive, just, and lasting political agreement.”
The Chinese President noted that the immediate priority is to improve the humanitarian situation and alleviate the suffering of civilians in Gaza, reiterating that Beijing, as a permanent member of the Security Council, “will continue to support the just cause of the Palestinian people to restore their legitimate national rights.”
This message comes just days after the Security Council approved a resolution, based on a plan by President Donald Trump, establishing an international security force for Gaza until 2027. China abstained in the vote, stating that the text is “vague” on fundamental aspects and does not sufficiently reflect Palestinian sovereignty, a criticism also shared by Russia.
Beijing has insisted in recent weeks that any post-war agreement must avoid external tutelage formulas and be reinforced by a political process that gives prominence to the Palestinians. Chinese spokesperson Fu Cong warned in the Security Council that, in the approved approach, “Palestine is barely visible” and the proposed governance mechanisms lack clarity.
The conflict remains active despite a ceasefire declared over a month ago. According to data from Gaza’s Ministry of Health released this week, more than 350 Palestinians have been killed since then by Israeli fire.
Israel claims its actions are in response to incursions by militants who crossed the so-called ‘yellow line,’ the area of the Palestinian enclave from which the Israeli army withdrew at the beginning of the truce. Meanwhile, Israeli human rights organizations have reported a severe deterioration in the conditions of Palestinian prisoners.
At the same time, internal disputes are growing between the Israeli government and military over the management of the war and investigations into failures prior to the attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on October 7, 2023.
