Coutinho slams gov’t rejection of civil service pay rise

The president of the Macau Civil Servants Association (ATFPM) lashed out at the government’s decision not to increase public sector workers’ salaries in 2026, public service broadcaster TDM reported.

José Pereira Coutinho considered it “unacceptable” for the government to justify the decision on the grounds of containing public expenditure when large‑scale projects are under way which, in the view of the lawmaker, are potential ‘white elephants’.

“Last year we had no pay rise, despite the six gaming concessionaires having increased salaries. Civil servants were expecting to be able to improve their purchasing power. Now the only expectation is to see civil service allowances updated and also to review career structures and the indices in the pay scale,” Coutinho said in an interview with TDM.
