Macau gaming operator SJM Resorts announced after trading hours on Thursday that it will not proceed with its planned acquisition of the Ponte 16 property, leading to the imminent closure of Casino Ponte 16 on November 28th at 23:59.
The decision follows what the company described as a comprehensive business review focused on long-term planning, commercial considerations, and resource prioritization across its portfolio. SJM Resorts stated the outcome reflects its disciplined approach to capital deployment and commitment to strengthening core operations in alignment with market developments and its long-term strategy.
Following the decision, SJM Resorts entered into a mutual termination agreement with Pier 16 Entertainment Group Corporation Limited, advancing the cessation of services at the casino. All gaming tables and machines currently operating at Casino Ponte 16 will be redeployed to other SJM Resorts properties to ensure service continuity for customers.
The company has established arrangements for customers holding unredeemed chips, deposits, or cash rebates accumulated at Casino Ponte 16. From November 29th, 2025, patrons may visit other SJM Resorts casinos for follow-up arrangements, with the company guaranteeing that all customer entitlements will be honored.
SJM Resorts emphasized its commitment to protecting local employment in the transition. All local employees currently employed by SJM Resorts at Casino Ponte 16 will remain with the company and be reassigned to gaming-related roles at other properties, as needed. Local employees not directly employed by SJM Resorts will receive priority consideration for vacancies within the group under equal circumstances, with support measures provided to ensure smooth transitions.
The company stated it does not expect the decision or casino closure to have any material adverse impact on the group’s business, operations, liquidity, or financial condition. SJM Resorts affirmed its intention to continue advancing long-term development plans aligned with Macau’s evolving market environment and the Macao Special Administrative Region Government’s objectives for gaming industry modernization.
The operator reaffirmed its commitment to fulfilling corporate responsibilities and contributing to the stable and sustainable development of Macau’s gaming sector in partnership with the local community.
