It was the year when everything began. The idea came from three Macau residents passionate about cars — Fernando Macedo Pinto, Carlos Silva, and Paulo Antas — during a coffee at the Hotel Riviera. Around 15 motor racing enthusiasts competed on a dirt road and sand track for 51 laps.

The main grandstand was built in concrete, featuring 10 pit boxes and seating for 300 spectators.
.1960
For the first time, the Macau Grand Prix became part of the international motor racing calendar, classified as a “national race with foreign participation.” It was also the first edition held under FIA regulations for sports and grand touring cars.
.1966
By this time, the Macau Grand Prix’s fame had reached Europe, and for the first time, an “imported” driver — Italian racer Mauro Bianchi — won the race.
.1967
The first Motorcycle Grand Prix took place, coinciding sadly with the first fatal accident in the event’s history.
.1978
The race celebrated its 25th anniversary. Bob Harper, with help from Teddy Yip, organized the Race of Giants, a special event featuring many big names in motorsport.
.1980
The Macau Grand Prix was designated as the first Formula Pacific Championship.
.2003
The Jubilee Festival marked the city’s greatest celebration to date. The Grand Prix took place over two weekends, drawing an overwhelming number of competitors from around the world.
.2005
The 52nd edition became a milestone in the event’s history by hosting the final and decisive round of a world championship — the FIA World Touring Car Championship.
.2020
This marked the first year of races held during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the restrictions, the Organizing Committee ensured the Grand Prix went ahead, continuing to do so in 2021 and 2022.

To celebrate the 70th Macau Grand Prix, the city welcomed a lineup of international stars, featuring 11 races over six days of competition across two consecutive weekends, from November 11–12 and 16–19. The event drew a record crowd of 145,000 spectators. Brazil’s Daniel Serra, driving a Ferrari 296 GT3, set a new lap record for the Macau GT Cup, completing it in 2 minutes and 16.051 seconds.

The “Celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macao SAR – 71st Macau Grand Prix” took place from November 14 to 17, 2024, marking a triple celebration. U.S. driver Ugo Ugochukwu, aged 17, was crowned the first-ever winner of the Macau Grand Prix – FIA Formula Regional World Cup.
