Three people died from methanol poisoning after drinking in the state of São Paulo. The first two deaths were recorded on Saturday (27) and the third on Monday (29). Two cases occurred in São Bernardo do Campo and one in the capital.
According to São Paulo state government’s Health Surveillance Center (CVS), the suspicion is that these people consumed contaminated drinks.
Municipalities in São Paulo state are monitoring and inspecting establishments selling alcoholic beverages, such as distributors and bars that may be involved with cases of contaminated products, according to a note sent by the CVS to the report.
The agency also stressed that the consumption of alcoholic beverages of clandestine origin or without reliable provenance poses a health risk, as they may contain toxic substances.
In a note, the Brazilian Anti-Counterfeiting Association (ABCF) states that cases of methanol poisoning after drinking adulterated alcoholic beverages may be linked to activities of the criminal faction PCC (First Capital Command).
The organization says the substance was used by the PCC to adulterate fuel in a scheme that was recently dismantled.
