Australia gets associate observer status in CPLP, Ukraine bid noted with interest

The Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) on Friday granted Australia the status of associate observer and noted "with interest" new applications, such as that of Ukraine.

The resolution of the 15th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the CPLP, in Bissau, states that, in addition to Australia, the International Social Security Association (ISSA) will also have the status of associate observer.

The CPLP has around fifty associate observers, who do not have voting rights in the organisation but may participate in summits of heads of state and government and in the Cabinet, and may also present communications.

Australia and the International Social Security Association will now have this status “in view of their commitment to the principles and objectives of the CPLP and their interest in establishing a partnership in the field of political and diplomatic consultation, in various areas of cooperation and in the promotion and dissemination of the Portuguese language”.

The Summit also noted “with interest the applications of Ukraine and the Hague Conference on Private International Law” and decided “to propose the conclusion of their evaluation at the next ordinary meeting of the CPLP Cabinet”.

At the proposal of the Cabinet, the CPLP will also have new consultative observers, a figure that already exists in the organisation, intended for partners in various areas and specialities.

The CPLP decided to grant this status to ACTUAR – Association for Cooperation and Development, the Portuguese Association for Marine Litter – APLM, the Group of Activists in Treatment (GAT), the University Institute of Psychological, Social and Life Sciences – ISPA and the Trade Union Confederation of Education of Portuguese Language Countries.

In addition to these organisations based in Portugal, the Alliance Against Leprosy Institute (IACH) or Dr Laila de Laguiche Institute, the Latin American Climate Lawyers Initiative for Mobilising Action (LACLIMA) and the Institute for Development and Human Rights (IDDH) in Brazil have also been granted consultative observer status.
