Police continue search for Madeleine McCann on German request

The Portuguese Judicial Police (PJ) is conducting searches in the Algarve district of Lagos, at the request of the German authorities, as part of the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in 2007.

In a statement, the PJ, the country’s main criminal investigation agency, said that the searches began today (Monday) and will continue until Friday, June 6, and that they are being carried out following a European Investigation Decision “issued by the German authorities and signed by the leader of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in the District of Faro”.

The Braunschweig Public Prosecutor’s Office is conducting the ongoing investigation and has requested the execution of search warrants in the district of Lagos, as part of “a preliminary investigation against a German citizen suspected of the murder of British citizen Madeleine Beth McCann,” the PJ added.

The Portuguese police also said that all evidence seized during this week’s searches will be handed over to the German authorities with the authorisation of the Portuguese public prosecutor’s office.

On May 3, 2007, Madeleine McCann disappeared from the apartment where she was sleeping with her two-year-old twin brothers in Praia da Luz, while her parents were having dinner with friends a few metres away in the seaside resort.

In 2020, German police declared Christian Brückner as the main suspect in the child’s abduction and murder, but no formal charges were brought.
