Portuguese Institute of the Orient – IPOR launches the Short Film Contest

The main aim of this competition, organized by IPOR, is to promote the creative use of the Portuguese language, highlighting Macau as a platform for teaching and learning the language. It also seeks to develop content in Portuguese for new technological platforms, showing Macau as a multicultural space of encounter and cultural dialog between East and West.

The contest is open to all students enrolled in the General Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PLE) Course at the Portuguese Institute of the East (IPOR) and specific courses offered by partner institutions for the academic year 2023-2024, regardless of participants’ nationality and age. Submitted works must be original and can be presented individually or in collaboration.

The competing videos should creatively explore a multicultural vision of Macau, connecting the Portuguese language with the Special Administrative Region of Macau (RAEM). Participants have the freedom to choose the focus of their video, with originality and creativity of proposals being highly valued. The videos should have a duration between 120 and 240 seconds, with Portuguese as the main language. Alternatively, including Portuguese subtitles is allowed, as long as they do not reference commercial brands.

The contest will take place in several stages:

  • March 1 to March 26, 2024: Reception of video proposals.
  • March 27 to April 2, 2024: Selection of the best videos (up to a maximum of ten) by the contest jury.
  • April 3 to April 9, 2024: Review and correction of the selected works.
  • April 10, 2024: Publication of the selected videos on the official IPOR Facebook page.
  • April 11 to May 3, 2024: Public voting through “likes” on the preferred video (each “like” corresponds to a vote).
  • May 5, 2024: Announcement of the winners.
  • May 7, 2024: Prize distribution.

The prizes include:

– First place: a cash prize of MOP5,000 (five thousand patacas).
– Second place: a cash prize of MOP3,000 (three thousand patacas).
– Third place: a cash prize of MOP1,500 (one thousand and five hundred patacas).
– Honorable mentions: the fourth and fifth places will receive an honorable mention with a cash prize of MOP500 (five hundred patacas) each.

Diplomas will be awarded to all authors of the selected videos.

IPOR eagerly awaits the submission of inspiring video projects that embrace Macau’s multicultural mosaic and exemplify the power of the Portuguese language as a means of expression. This contest represents an incredible opportunity to showcase your creativity and make an impact in promoting Macau’s cultural heritage.
