Portugal continues to be promoted as a cheap destination for Americans

“This is the year to follow the dream”, announced Forbes magazine in one of the first articles published in 2023. “Quitting your job and moving to one of the cheapest (and best) places to live in the world, a country with costs so low that you might be able to stop working.”

That country, number one on the Forbes list, is Portugal. Cheap, with visa facilities, beautiful beaches and a low cost of living. The article says that it is possible to live well on 2000 dollars a month, and even for less in rural areas.

The ranking was based on the International Living website’s Annual Index for retirees looking for a change of scenery. The Forbes article joins many others that have appeared in the North American press and characterize Portugal as a cheap destination for expatriates. CNBC published several pieces in 2022 about Americans who emigrated to Portugal and live well with less money — in one of the articles, there is a subtitle that says “Portugal is cheaper than many western countries.”
