Taiwan: Beijing says reunification is closer than ever

China “is closer than ever” to achieving “full reunification” with Taiwan, Chinese officials said yesterday, days after leader Xi Jinping won a third five-year term.

“We are closer than ever in our history and more confident and capable that we will achieve national rejuvenation and the complete reunification of the motherland,” said Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the Chinese State Council. in Beijing in response to questions about Xi’s remarks on Taiwan at the opening of the 20th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

“The wheels of history are moving towards the reunification of China”, said Xi, who assured that the reunification “will come to fruition”. The CCP this weekend elected the new composition of the Central Committee and the Politburo Standing Committee, keeping Xi as the organization’s secretary general.
