Suncity case: Workers testify about the promoter’s relationship with other companies

In the trial of the Suncity case, several workers of companies that the prosecution says were created by Alvin Chau to carry out illegal betting admit that there is some relationship between these agencies and the gambling promoter.

The Public Ministry tries to demonstrate a close relationship with Suncity, but none of the workers can name Alvin Chau as the direct boss. In court, the workers said they were not sure about the relationships between the companies, but admit that they received Suncity’s salary and that they received commissions from the former promoter when they helped clients.

Several workers from Tin Commercial Agency and Astronomical Phenomena Management and Consulting said the companies did not belong to Suncity, but admitted ties to Alvin Chau’s promoter.

The indictment attempts to show that the two companies were subsidiaries of Suncity and were responsible for overseeing the side bets at the heart of this trial. The defense disputes that the companies had a direct relationship with Suncity.

Today, among the workers interviewed, there were those who said that they did the job interview for both companies and signed the contract at Suncity. They received part of their salary in cash delivered to the accounting department of the former gambling promoter. But when asked who the direct boss was, everyone replied that it was Cheong CHi Kin, the fifth defendant in this case, one of those who admitted to carrying out these illegal bets.

Cheong is believed to be part of Alvin Chau’s criminal group.

One of the witnesses said he thought the two men were partners and they all stress that Cheong called Chau his boss. There are, however, two versions here: the defense considers that patrão is a designation given to wealthy businessmen in Macau, with many calling the businessmen boss. As for the MP, the name means that Alvin Chau was in fact the person behind the parallel gaming companies, something that Suncity’s owner has so far denied in court.

None of the witnesses heard today could say for sure if Alvin Chau was a boss in the true sense of the word, everyone assumes it was a form of respect.

One of the last workers to be heard said that the Tin Commercial Agency provided services not only to Suncity, but to other joo promoters such as Tak Chun, but to the MP said that only in the case of suncity did they receive commissions – the so-called tips – directly from the promoter and not, as is usual, from the hands of the clients.
