It is possible to slow the progression of some types of breast cancer, says study

The model involves the early discovery of genetic mutations that are in the genesis of tumors, thus adapting the treatment. Know in detail the conclusions of this investigation that involved the analysis by means of liquid biopsy and medication

The report published in Lancet Oncology, a leading cancer journal, is the first of its kind “to show a significant clinical benefit after previously targeting the bESR1 mutation,” the authors summarize.

The analysis, based on the collection of data from dozens of French hospitals and by the oncologist François Clément Bidard, shows that it is possible to slow down the progression of certain types of breast cancer through the early discovery of genetic mutations that are in the genesis of tumors, thus adapting the treatment.

Now, in a disease of this nature, the tumor cells evolve over time, and depending on certain mutations, they can become resistant to the treatments used.

To detect the respective mutations, the researchers used a technique that has shown promise in recent years in cancer studies: the “liquid biopsy”. In this, unlike the classic one, the objective is to study the content of the tumors without having to extract tissue from the breast itself, just by collecting blood for analysis, which brings with it a small part of the DNA coming from cancer cells.

To reach this conclusion, the investigation divided the sample into two groups of approximately 80 patients with that mutation. One part continued to receive regular treatment, while the other fulfilled another prescription and went on to the drug fulvestrant. In the second group, the research team found that cancer progression was halted for a longer average duration, for several months.
