US presses Vatican not to renew deal with China

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has asked the Vatican not to renew an agreement with China regarding the appointment of bishops of the Catholic Church.

The pact was signed in 2018 and expires next October, but the Holy See has already confirmed its intention to extend it. According to Pompeo, the Vatican will jeopardize its “moral authority” if it renews the agreement.

“Two years ago, the Holy See reached an agreement with the Communist Party of China, hoping to help Chinese Catholics. But the Communist Party’s abuses against the faithful only got worse, ”said the Secretary of State on Twitter.
