Scholar critical of Xi Jinping released after one week detention

Chinese scholar Xu Zhangrun, known for publishing several essays in which he criticizes the President of China, Xi Jinping, was released after being held for nearly a week, friends and family said today.

Xu Zhangrun was arrested at home on the outskirts of Beijing by more than 20 security agents last week, but he was released today and has returned home, according to friends and family members quoted by different media.

The professor’s wife was contacted by the authorities, who justified her husband’s arrest for the fact that he used the services of a prostitute during a trip to Chengdu, in southwest China, according to the France-Presse agency.
