Democratic US presidential candidate Joe Biden announced today that he will nullify “on the first day” of his presidency the decision made by Republican Donald Trump to withdraw Washington from the World Health Organization (WHO) if he wins the vote.
“Americans are safer when America is committed to strengthening global health. On the first day of my presidency, I will join WHO and reaffirm our global leadership, ”said the Democratic nominee in the race for the White House.
The withdrawal of the United States from WHO will not take effect until July 6, 2021, a year after today’s official notification, allowing Joe Biden to overturn the decision if he arrives at the White House in January 2021.
Washington and the United Nations confirmed today the official notification about the departure of the United States of America from WHO, accused by the Americans of delaying to react to the pandemic of the new coronavirus.
The United States Department of State and the UN itself confirmed that the notification was delivered on Monday to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres.
The departure will only be effective on July 6, 2021, although it can be reversed, all depending on the US presidential elections of November 3, in case the Republican candidate Donald Trump, re-running for president, is defeated by Democratic candidate Joe Biden.
According to the UN spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, the secretary-general of the United Nations, as the depositary of the WHO and in accordance with the organization’s statutes approved in 1946, “will now begin the verification process to determine whether they are meeting all conditions for the departure ”of the United States from WHO.
