The assets of Autoridade Monetária de Macau (AMCM) reached a new all-time high in January for the second consecutive month, the regulator announced.
According to a balance sheet published in Macau’s Official Gazette, the reserve stood at 673.8 billion patacas (around €72.2 billion) at the end of January.
This represents an increase of 7.03 billion patacas (€753.5 million) compared to the previous record of 666.7 billion patacas (€70.3 billion), set at the end of the previous month.
It marks the strongest start to the year for the reserve since 2015 and nearly doubles the growth recorded in December, when assets increased by 3.54 billion patacas (€372.6 million).

The reserve grew by 50.5 billion patacas (€5.33 billion) over the past year, exceeding the increase recorded in 2024, when assets rose by 35.7 billion patacas (€3.76 billion).
The best year on record remains 2019, before the pandemic, when assets grew by 70.6 billion patacas (€7.44 billion).
At the end of January, the extraordinary reserve stood at 503.1 billion patacas (€53.9 billion), while the basic reserve—equivalent to 150% of Macau’s public budget—totaled 163.6 billion patacas (€17.5 billion).
In November, the Assembleia Legislativa de Macau unanimously approved the 2026 budget, which foresees public spending of 113.5 billion patacas (€12.2 billion).

Outsourced investments account for the largest share of the financial reserve, totaling 293.4 billion patacas (€31.4 billion). The reserve also includes deposits and current accounts worth 273.7 billion patacas (€29.3 billion), as well as debt securities amounting to 105.5 billion patacas (€11.3 billion).
In 2025, investments generated more than 42.9 billion patacas (€4.6 billion) in returns, corresponding to a yield of 6.9%, the AMCM said in a report.
This represents a 38.7% increase compared to 2024, when returns totaled nearly 31 billion patacas (€3.32 billion), equivalent to a yield of 5.3%.
