How did the eye of vertebrates first evolve? A new study suggests an unusual beginning for this process: our invertebrate ancestors from 560 million years ago were like cyclops, with a single eye on top of their head, which only later split into two.
The complexity and sophistication of the eyes of vertebrates caught the attention of Charles Darwin (1809-1882) when he was developing his theory of evolution. “The eye still gives me a shudder,” he confided to American botanist Asa Gray (1810-1888) in 1860.
