Cape Verde will launch international tenders this Saturday and Sunday for the expansion of the ports on the islands of Santo Antão and São Vicente, in an investment supported by the European Union (EU), the government of the archipelago announced today.
The port on São Vicente island (Porto Grande) will benefit from an extension of container docks, an expansion of its storage yard, a new dock for bulk cargo, and improvements to fish transshipment operations.
Porto Grande hosts facilities dedicated to exporting tuna and mackerel products, among other fisheries, with Europe—especially Spain—being the main destination.
The international public tender, with the official launch scheduled for Saturday in São Vicente, includes the selection of a contractor for design, engineering, and construction.
The port on Santo Antão island (Porto Novo), located 15 kilometers away, will benefit from a dock extension and will gain the capacity to accommodate larger vessels. The tender follows the same model, with the official launch scheduled for Sunday on the island. Both ceremonies will be attended by Cape Verdean Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva.
Cape Verde and the EU signed in September 2024 the largest financial support package ever from Brussels to the archipelago, currently totaling €378 million, allocated to the energy, port, and digital infrastructure sectors.
