Speaking to reporters, Deputy Commissioner McDonald was asked when police had last been in contact with the suspect. He confirmed that officers had contact with Jesse “at some point last year” but stressed that there had been no contact in the days immediately before the incident.
When questioned about whether the suspect held a valid firearms licence, McDonald said: “I believe she had a licence which expired in 2024. She did not have any firearms registered to her.”
The deputy commissioner also said police had identified the suspect in line with how she “chose to be identified”. According to McDonald, Jesse Rootselaar was born a biological male and began transitioning to female approximately six years ago. She “identified as female, both socially and publicly”, he added.
Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have not yet released further details about the circumstances surrounding the case.
