European Union Opens Antitrust Investigation Into Google Over Use of Online Content for AI

The European Commission has launched an antitrust investigation against Google over allegations that the company used content from online publishers and YouTube videos to train its artificial intelligence services without providing appropriate compensation to creators. The case focuses on Google’s recent features, such as AI Overviews, which use algorithms to generate responses directly in search results.

Independent organizations and publishers filed complaints, arguing that using this content without permission constitutes an anti-competitive advantage and could harm both press diversity and the open AI market.

If found in violation of EU law, Google could face heavy fines and restrictions on its AI services. The investigation aims to ensure fair competition, protect content creators, and maintain pluralism in the digital ecosystem. Google has acknowledged the scrutiny but warned that the investigation could “stifle innovation” at a time when AI is becoming increasingly central to the technology market.
