Macau plans rapid reuse of 39 sites, including car parks and public spaces

Macau authorities plan to repurpose 39 plots of land in the near term, including three outdoor car parks that will provide a total of 194 private-car spaces and 140 motorcycle spaces, some of which will include charging facilities.

Public Works Bureau Director Lam Wai Hou and Land and Urban Construction Bureau Deputy Director Mak Tat Io outlined the plan in a radio interview on Tuesday during a discussion on revitalising idle land.

Lam said construction on the three outdoor car parks — located on Rua da Cordoaria in Coloane, near the Dona Julieta Nobre de Carvalho residential complex in Toi San, and beside the Maritime School in Barra — has already begun. The government aims to open all three before the end of this month.

He added that 39 plots of varying sizes are being prepared for new uses, with substantive work already underway on nine of them. For three sites designated for recreational and sports facilities — Nam Van Lake C8, Taipa BT7 and New Urban Zone A, plot B13 — design work is expected to be completed this month, after which the government will launch public tenders for construction.

Lam also said the authorities intend to open temporary public spaces on three centrally located plots at Nam Van Lake A3, A4 and A9 before final development plans are confirmed.

Mak said his bureau will continue to work closely with the Public Works Bureau, noting that its responsibilities include identifying suitable idle land and recommending temporary uses. Once basic feasibility is confirmed in coordination with relevant departments, the sites will be passed to the Public Works Bureau for design and construction.
