Macau awards MOP1.3 billion contract for public sports complex in former canidrome area

The project, covering 40,425 square metres, will be built in two phases over 964 working days. It includes four pavilions and an outdoor athletics field, with facilities ranging from swimming pools and basketball courts to skateparks, climbing walls and children’s play areas.

There were 17 bids submitted to the public tender, of which the winning bid, by a consortium led by Omas Construction Group Limited, Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd. (Macau branch) and China Zhong Ji Industry and Installation (Macau) Ltd., was the sixth highest.

At the centre of the site, Pavilion 1 will be four floors high and include a swimming pool, a children’s pool, a basketball court, a running track and a cycling path for kids. To the north, Pavilion 2 will rise six floors and feature a skatepark, table tennis, a climbing wall, volleyball courts and two floors of badminton courts.

Beside it, Pavilion 3 will have seven floors, offering a five‑a‑side football pitch, multipurpose halls and outdoor activity areas. In the south, the Children’s Pavilion will be four floors high, with outdoor play areas, an indoor playground, creative classrooms and reading spaces. Its basement will be used for activity rooms and storage.

An outdoor athletics field will be built east of Pavilion 1, with eight standard running tracks, facilities for high and long jump, and a synthetic turf football pitch in the middle. Parking will be provided underground. Zone 1 will have 69 car spaces and 166 motorcycle spaces, while Zone 2 will add 415 car spaces and 425 motorcycle spaces, subject to final approval.

Construction will take place in two phases. Zone 1 will involve demolishing existing buildings and building Pavilions 1–3 plus the basement parking. Zone 2, which includes the Children’s Pavilion and athletics field, will begin only after Zone 1 is completed and open. During the works, the government will coordinate with relevant services to keep the nearby Lin Fong Sports Center open for public use.

The government described the project as a major investment in community infrastructure, designed to enhance leisure and sporting opportunities for residents across Macau.
