Guterres: China’s support for multilateralism is crucial

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin on the afternoon of August 30th. Guterres was in the country to attend the upcoming 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. He emphasized that China plays a vital role in upholding multilateralism, stating that "at a time when multilateralism is under attack, China's support is a key factor in maintaining the situation.”

Guterres pointed out that new policies are emerging on the international stage that are “difficult to understand, more like a performance than serious diplomacy,” and that intertwine commerce and politics. Against this backdrop, “China’s role as a fundamental pillar of the multilateral system is extremely important.” He thanked China for its long-standing support of the UN and expressed a willingness to promote stronger cooperation between the two sides in areas such as global governance, climate change, and artificial intelligence to further serve the common well-being of all humanity.

In the meeting, Xi Jinping responded by saying that “China will always be a partner the United Nations can rely on.” He stated that China is willing to deepen cooperation with the UN, support its central role in international affairs, and jointly bear the responsibility of safeguarding world peace and promoting development and prosperity.

Xi also noted that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War and the founding of the UN. He pointed out that history has shown that multilateralism, solidarity, and cooperation are the correct path to solving global challenges. As a permanent member of the Security Council, China will continue to adhere to true multilateralism and bring “stability and certainty” to the world through its Belt and Road Initiative, the three global initiatives, and the building of a community of shared future for mankind.

According to a Reuters report, Xi also met with several foreign leaders attending the summit at the Tianjin guest house that day, including Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, acting Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing, and Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. The report stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin and leaders from several countries in Central Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East would also attend the meeting, which is seen by observers as a significant gathering of “Global South” nations.
