A group of 47 Sands China team members, University of Macau teachers and students go on the ‘Sands China in the Greater Bay Area: Macao Hengqin Big Health Industry Study Tour’ together on June 27. The tour aimed at fostering exchange and helping future leaders explore the integration of tourism and the Big Health industry in Macao and Hengqin.
Tour Objectives & Participants
On June 27, 2025, a delegation of 47—comprising participants from the Sands China Integrated Resort Leader Development Programme and staff and students from the University of Macau’s Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences—embarked on the Macao-Hengqin Big Health Industry Study Tour. The initiative fosters industry exchange and equips future leaders with knowledge of Big Health tourism integration in Macau and Hengqin.
GMTCM Park & TCM Innovation
The group visited the Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Industrial Park of Co-operation between Guangdong and Macao (GMTCM Park) Exhibition Hall and the Traditional Chinese Medicine Technology and Creativity Museum. Interactive exhibits—crafted by Oscar-winning Wētā Workshop—illustrated the evolution and modernisation of TCM. Participants explored branded production showcases, learned about GMP-certified pilot production, and examined how local TCM enterprises leverage the park’s R&D and testing facilities.
Industry Integration & Economic Diversification
GMTCM Park serves as a pivotal platform for Macau’s health and pharmaceutical enterprises, poised to become a Greater Bay Area cluster. Following the May MOU between Sands China and GMTCM, the tour underscored how ‘1+4’ moderate diversification is advanced by integrating tourism + Big Health, laying the groundwork for future collaborations in health tourism products and MICE events.
Leadership Reflections
Dr. Wilfred Wong, Executive Vice Chairman of Sands China Ltd., noted that the tour translates the May MOU into action by familiarising participants with Hengqin’s TCM modernisation. He emphasised that blending Macau’s tourism infrastructure with Hengqin’s healthtech resources can propel Macau’s economic diversification and invite global investment into the Big Health sector.
Looking Ahead
The study tour exemplifies Sands China’s commitment to nurturing local talent and deepening Macau-Hengqin collaboration. Equipped with firsthand industry insights, team members and TCM students are positioned to drive future innovations in health tourism, supporting Macau’s integration into national economic development and elevating the region’s global competitiveness.
