China accuses US of “severely violating” trade truce

China has accused the US of "severely violating" their trade truce, asserting that Washington has undermined an agreement made in Geneva last month to lower tariffs

The Ministry of Commerce stated that US actions have breached a consensus reached during a phone call between Xi Jinping and Donald Trump, BBC news reported

The US had reduced tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, while China lowered its tariffs on US imports from 125% to 10%. However, the US Trade Representative claimed that China failed to remove non-tariff barriers as agreed.

Beijing pointed to specific violations, including halting sales of computer chip software to Chinese companies and canceling visas for Chinese students. Despite rising tensions, two White House officials indicated that Trump and Xi might hold talks soon to address these issues, although the Chinese side prefers discussions to occur at lower levels first.

Additionally, Trump announced plans to double tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%, aiming to strengthen the domestic steel industry and reduce reliance on China.
