Angola: Malaria deaths fell 19% in 2023; disease still big killer – government

Angola reduced the number of deaths from malaria recorded in the country by 19% from 2022 to 2023, according to the Ministry of Health, although the disease remains the main cause of morbidity and mortality in the country

In a note alluding to World Malaria Day, established in 2007 by the World Health Organisation (WHO), which is being marked on Friday, the Ministry of Health said that in 2023 Angola had reported more than 10 million cases, with a significant reduction in the number of deaths.

According to the note, Angola reported 12,480 deaths from malaria in 2022, falling to 10,089 in 2023. The Portuguese-language country is the African country with the fourth-highest number of reported cases in 2022, behind Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

Under the slogan ‘Reinvest, Reimagine and Rekindle’ it is this year joining “the global call to renew commitments, innovate in strategies and reinforce investments for the elimination of malaria by 2030.” Malaria remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases, affecting pregnant women and children in particular.
