Guests of honour officiate the opening ceremony of the Sands China Ltd. Macau Open Badminton 2024 tournament Sept. 23 at The Venetian Macao.
Co-organised by Sands China Ltd. and the Badminton Federation of Macau (BFM), the tournament was held at the Macao East Asian Games Dome Sept. 24-29, with the support of the Sports Bureau of the Macao SAR Government.
The Macau Open Badminton Championships is an event of the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300, and has been held as an annual competition since 2006.
A total of 375 athletes from a record-breaking 30 nations and regions around the world applied to play in the tournament, with 259 qualifying.
The semi-finals and finals were live-streamed on the Badminton World Federation’s YouTube channel, allowing badminton enthusiasts worldwide to witness the superb skills on display in Macao.
The Macau Open was the first world-class badminton tournament held in Macao since the 2024 Paris Olympics, and awarded US$210,000 (approximately MOP 1.68 million) in prize money.
With Sands China’s full support and collaboration, this high-profile sports event was held in alignment with the Macao government’s strategy on diversification and organising international mega events.
The company hopes the tournament contributes to international goodwill, promotes Macao’s reputation as a ‘City of Sports,’ and strengthens Macao’s image as a world centre of tourism and leisure.

sports event development and management for Sands China Ltd.
Sands China used the opportunity presented by the tournament to give back to the local community with the Sands Cares Presents: Learn from Badminton Elites event Saturday, in cooperation with the Badminton Federation of Macau. Players Wang Chi-lin and Angus Ng each shared their competition experiences and the struggles they faced as athletes with 40 students from Escola dos Moradores de Macau and Our Lady of Fatima Girls’ School, along with members of Sands China’s badminton team. They encouraged them to maintain resilience, work hard, and continuously strive for self-improvement in the pursuit of their dreams and goals. The participants also enjoyed an opportunity to closely interact, play with and get inspired by these renowned players.
As an integrated tourism and leisure enterprise rooted in Macao for more than 20 years, Sands China’s support of the Macau Open badminton tournament is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts and its support of ‘tourism + sport.’
Sands China has sponsored and organised various sporting events over the years and has invited international sports stars to attend tennis and basketball invitationals and training camps, Golf Day and other events, encouraging the public to participate in sports while attracting tourists and athletes from overseas to visit Macao and experience its charm.
