Discover the Vibrant World of Japanese Contemporary Art Exhibition at Sands Gallery

The Japanese Contemporary Art Exhibition, a remarkable showcase of over 90 artworks by six contemporary Japanese artists, is currently on display at Sands Gallery. The exhibition, which is part of the 2024 Macau Japan Spring Festival, will run until March 30th and offers visitors an immersive experience into the essence of Japanese art and culture.

Sands Gallery’s latest exhibition, the Japanese Contemporary Art Exhibition, is available for public viewing until March 30, featuring over 90 artworks by six contemporary Japanese artists(Sands China).

Bringing together the support of esteemed organizations such as the Kyoto Prefecture of Japan, the City Government of Kyoto, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), and the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), this multi-dimensional exhibition co-organised by Sands China represents the company’s commitment in promoting art and cultural diversity in Macao.

Highlighting Japanese Artistry

Curated by gallery UG, one of Japan’s largest contemporary art galleries, the Japanese Contemporary Art Exhibition features six exclusive gallery UG artists renowned for their exceptional talent. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the captivating works of Kunihiko Nohara, Takaoki Tajima, Hiroya Yoshikawa, Nami Okada, Keitoku Toizumi and Ryosuke Kawahira, each contributing their unique artistic vision to the exhibiton.

Dr. Wilfred Wong, Executive Vice Chairman of Sands China Ltd., expressed the company’s dedication to promoting Macao’s international image of multiculturalism and inclusiveness through the arts. “This new exhibition is part of Sands China’s ongoing commitment to the diversification of art and culture in Macao,” said Dr. Wong. “Sands Gallery is proud to host this exhibition in support of ‘tourism + art’ in Macao, helping attract international tourists and residents with our expansive non-gaming portfolio.”

“Happy Aura, Happy Taste”

Eiichiro Sasaki, owner of gallery UG, described Sands Gallery as a museum-like space and emphasized his curational mission of allocating independent exhibition areas to showcase the diverse characteristics of the artists. Sasaki’s vision for the exhibition is centered around a theme of “Happy Aura, Happy Taste,” carefully selecting works that bring a sense of happiness to everyone.

About the Artists and Their Works

  • Kunihiko Nohara, a Hokkaido-born sculptor, presents mesmerising wooden sculptures that transcend convention. Each sculpture is a testament to Nohara’s avant-garde vision, blending abstract imagery and vibrant colors to create captivating worlds.
  • Takaoki Tajima explores intricate relationship between colours through his exceptional artistic skill. With bold compositions and mysterious expressions. Tajima’s works invite viewers to unravel the depths of his characters’ emotions.
  • Hiroya Yoshikawa, a fourth-generation craftsman of Yoshikawa Sensyo, seamlessly merges traditional Kyo Yuzen dyeing with contemporary aesthetics. His exquisite kimonos and artworks transform silk and dye into living art forms.
  • Nami Okada takes viewers on a nostalgic journey through her captivating landscape paintings. Inspired by personal experiences and memories, Okada beautifully captures real places, evoking an enchanting sense of allure.
  • Keitoku Toizumi’s meticulously crafted scenes transport viewers to a surreal world where reality and fiction intertwine. His works explore the intriguing gap between the real and the imagined.
  • Ryosuke Kawahira fearlessly channels childhood experiences into a unique form of creative expression. Through vibrant canvas works, Kawahira transforms memories into captivating art, showcasing his distinctive and colourful portrayal of underpants.
