“Alipay, the mainland China version, recently opened support for adding Mastercard as one of the payment methods in its mobile application, including Mastercard BNU debit and credit cards. BNU customers can now conveniently make payments within China by presenting the QR code generated on the Alipay App linked to BNU Mastercard cards,” the bank’s CEO, Carlos Cid Álvares, told Plataforma.
Part of the Alibaba group, Alipay is the most widely used third-party online/mobile payment service provider in China.
Last year, the bank also announced the launch of a new digital payment service, called “BNU Pay”, which allows UnionPay cardholders to make payments not only in Macau but also in Mainland China and abroad.
The system, integrated into the BNU App, can be used anywhere the UnionPay QR code is accepted. UnionPay is the only interbank network connecting all ATMs in Mainland China. Through the UnionPay International network, UnionPay cards are accepted in 180 countries and regions.
BNU recorded profits of MOP288.4 million in the first half of the year, a year-on-year increase of 125.2 per cent. The banking entity was the international bank with the highest contribution to consolidated results of Caixa Geral de Depósitos in the first six months of 2023, contributing around 33 million euros.
