The President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen defended this Wednesday, in Vilnius, Lithuania, that Ukraine has conditions to fulfill, in order to join not only the European Union, but also to be a member of NATO. “We have an important contribution to make, in relation to Ukraine’s desire not only to be a member of the European Union, but also to join NATO”, said the president of the European Commission, stressing that for dual membership “reforms are indispensable ”, such as “the strengthening of institutions and the fight, for example, against corruption”.
It is understood that the two processes will from now on go hand in hand. Ursula von Der Leyen promises “in this context”, the support of Brussels. “The European Commission is working intensively with Ukraine to carry out these reforms”, said Von der Leyen, considering it “amazing to see how quickly Ukraine is guaranteeing the reforms, despite this war”.
“One thing is certain: this horrible war changes the face of Europe forever,” she said, hailing the application of the defensive alliance space, with “Finland joining NATO [and] Sweden joining NATO.” “Once again, congratulations to Sweden for this success”, said Von der Leyen, stressing that he will never accept that the rules are dictated by those who hold the military force.
