Lula da Silva says that Xi Jinping’s visit to Russia could help end the war in Ukraine

Brazilian President Lula da Silva said today that Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Russia is “very good news” that could help stop the war in Ukraine, facing skepticism from the West.

“I think it’s great news that China has gone there now, it’s very good news because the whole world needs to stop and start talking about peace,” said the Brazilian head of state in an interview with TV 247.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced that he intends to talk about the conflict in Ukraine with Xi Jinping, with whom he will meet as part of his state visit to China between March 26th and 31st.

“Russia is not just any country, it is not insignificant. Russia is very important to ensure that world peace prevails for many centuries”, said the Brazilian progressive leader.

Lula da Silva also reaffirmed Brazil’s position of “condemning the invasion of Ukraine’s territorial integrity” and noted that Russia did not have to do this, but it did and has now been at war for over a year.

“It is necessary to talk about peace, because the United States and Europe are not talking about peace. The whole world is directly or indirectly involved in this war, ”he considered.

In this context, the Brazilian President highlighted that China is “an extremely important country, which can have a more serious conversation with the United States” on the subject.

Xi Jinping is currently on a state visit to Russia, where he was received by President Vladimir Putin to discuss, among other things, the Chinese peace plan for Ukraine.

Lula da Silva insisted in the interview that “Brazil is available to make any effort to guarantee peace” and that he said this personally to the presidents of the United States of America, Joe Biden, and of France, Emmanuel Macron, and to the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, in recent contacts.

“First you have to stop the war and then talk to see what can be fixed in the relationship between the two countries, which is enough for Russia and Ukraine to accept. But you can only speak when the war is over”, pondered Lula da Silva.

The South American head of state, who recently proposed the creation of a group of countries to mediate between Russia and Ukraine, said he was convinced that “Brazil can make an extraordinary contribution” to ending the conflict and achieving peace. .

The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since the Second World War (1939-1945).
