Pope says peace in Ukraine is possible and reiterates willingness to mediate negotiations

The Pope returned this Friday to express his desire for the war in Ukraine to end and again to say that the Vatican is available to do everything possible to mediate the conflict, because “peace is possible”.

“Yes, I have hope. Let’s not give up, peace is possible. However, everyone must commit to demilitarizing hearts (…), in order to deactivate and disarm violence afterwards. We must all be pacifists. We must want peace, not just a truce, which can only serve to rearm. True peace, which is the fruit of dialogue”, said Francis, in an interview published this Friday in the newspaper “La Stampa”.

The Pope also reiterated that “the Vatican is ready to do everything possible to mediate and end the conflict in Ukraine”.

“We are constantly attentive to the evolution of the situation (…). The Secretary of State works and works well, every day, and is evaluating every hypothesis and valuing every opening that could lead to a real ceasefire, to real negotiations. In the meantime, we are committed to humanitarian support for the people of Ukraine,” Francis said.
