Telework leads 34.4% of European professionals to self-medicate

A trend towards self-medication is emerging among teleworking Europeans. This is one of the conclusions “Survey Attack: Telework Wellbeing Report 2022”, carried out jointly by NFON and Statista Q, which examines the situation of professionals in this work regime in eight countries, including Portugal, in which 34.4% of respondents said they had taken supplements without a prescription to improve their well-being since the beginning of the pandemic, 18.2% to increase concentration and 13.4% for recovery.

This set includes melatonin, legal cannabis products, plant extracts, vitamins and calming teas. The situation differs from country to country: while 49.7% of Italians surveyed say they use this practice, in Austria the figure corresponds to less than half, standing at 22.1%.

“When people have to continue to function in their daily lives in a threatening situation on a personal and global level [such as the pandemic], different strategies are used to cope and be able to perform daily tasks – even when teleworking – despite the tension” , says Christian Montag, a professor of molecular psychology who collaborated on the study, quoted in a statement. The official adds that “the home office is becoming the new reality, and this situation needs constant attention and care, so that the new working model in Europe does not end up being the main reason for a trip to therapy”.
