Estimates point to 73 million unemployed young people worldwide

After the sharp drops during the pandemic, 2022 is still not going to be the year of the global recovery in terms of youth employment. The conclusion is in a report by the International Labor Organization (ILO), regarding the International Youth Day, which is marked this Friday. The ILO estimates that unemployment this year will reach 73 million young people worldwide, a figure still higher than that recorded in 2019.

The percentage of “neither nor” young people, that is, who do not work, study or are in training, is also at a particularly high level, and there are much more worldwide since 2020. The first year of the pandemic has increased this share of the population. population to over 23% globally, an increase not seen in at least 15 years.

On the “neither nor” the latest figures are precisely from 2020, but in the case of unemployment, the ILO estimates reach the present day to conclude that the pandemic has aggravated the labor challenges of those between 15 and 24 years old, this being the age group most penalized by Covid-19 in terms of work.
