Haruki Murakami grants a wish to a young woman who turns 20

After reading two short stories by other authors, Haruki Murakami decided to write his own: The Girl of the Years. It is now reissued with illustrations by Kat Menschik, who from DN pre-publishes today

A long story by Haruki Murakami, The Girl of the Years, arrives at bookstores on Tuesday, of those in which the Japanese writer does not leave the reader time to breathe until the end is reached. It is the story of a young woman who has to work the day she turns 20 and a lonely man who can grant him a wish.

The first time it was translated into English dates back to 2003 by its usual Japanese translator, Jay Rubin, and published in Harper’s Magazine. The following year, it integrated a volume with stories of birthdays. Murakami’s, as it should be, is intriguing and it can be said that it is up to the reader to give his own end to the tale.
