Radicalization of the ‘anti-mask’ movement scandalizes Germany

This Sunday (30), several political authorities in Germany denounced the “attack on democracy”, after the attempted invasion of the national parliament during the “anti-masks” demonstration, which represented a new stage in the radicalization of the movement.

Saturday night’s images of hundreds of protesters trying to force the barriers and police cordon up the stairs of Berlin’s famous Reichstag building, had a major impact on the country.

The incident was the culmination of an act by the “anti-mask” movement, which brought together nearly 40,000 people to protest the restrictions imposed by the covid-19 pandemic and ended in 300 arrests.

Today, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier denounced the “unbearable attack on the heart of our democracy and the excesses of the extreme right”, as well as the “Reich flags” that were displayed by protesters to remember the empire that ended in 1919 , after the First World War.
