North Korea raises confinement order in Kaesong

North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un has lifted the confinement in the city of Kaesong, where thousands of people have been quarantined, following the announcement of the country’s first covid-19 case, the official North Korean Agency reported on Friday.

During a one-party meeting on Thursday, Kim Jong-un however reaffirmed that he will keep borders closed and rejected any foreign aid, as the country is rebuilding thousands of houses, roads and bridges damaged by heavy rains and floods in the past few weeks.

On July 26, North Korea declared a “maximum health emergency” due to the covid-19 pandemic, decreeing the isolation of the city of Kaesong, on the border with South Korea, after detecting a suspicious case, the first announced by the regime.
