Russia hopes to have a vaccine against covid-19 to administer as early as August. Russian authorities, heard by CNN, are aiming for the next 10 days, but approval of the vaccine from the National Gamaleya Epidemiology and Microbiology Research Center in Moscow could happen earlier.
Health professionals are at the forefront of combating the pandemic and they will be the first to get the vaccine, which will be approved for public use.
“It’s a Sputnik moment,” said Kirill Dmitriev, leader of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, which finances vaccine research, referring to 1957, when the Soviet Union successfully launched its first satellite, in the middle of the cold war .
“The Americans were surprised when they heard Sputnik’s signal. It is the same with this vaccine. Russia will get there first, ”added Dmitriev, quoted by CNN.
Last week, Russia announced that it had successfully completed the clinical trial phase. “The results of the analyzes show unequivocally that all volunteers developed an immune response as a result of the vaccine,” said the Russian Ministry of Defense. At that time, it was said that on August 4, volunteers will undergo a series of new control analyzes to confirm the results and safety of the vaccine.
