Allies and opposition send recovery wishes and criticism to Bolsonaro

Filipe Sousa

After the public announcement that the Covid-19 test had been positive, Jair Bolsonaro has received wishes for improvements from all political quarters, from allies, ex-allies and opponents. Political opponents do not forget criticism of the president for managing the country’s pandemic.

On the day that Bolsonaro released the result of his fourth test on the new coronavirus, social networks were swarming with reactions, mostly addressing votes for rapid recovery, but many took the opportunity to point the finger at the work of the Bolsonarist executive during the crisis provoked by the pandemic.

Donald Trump sent a message from the White House through White House spokesman Kayleigh McEnany. “I did not speak to the President about this (positive result), but we wish him well, as well as a speedy recovery,” he said.

In Brazil, ex-Minister of Justice Sergio Moro, who was a member of the Government until April, was short in his statement, stating that “the head of state is only to wish for full recovery”. For his part, former Minister of Health Luiz Henrique Mandetta said that he supports recovery and recommended that he review his position on prevention. Since the beginning of the world coronavirus crisis, Bolsonaro has made statements in which he disparages the pandemic. “We hope for recovery and that he reflects on prevention,” said Mandetta, adding: “Another confirmation that the disease is in extremely active circulation”.

The governor of São Paulo, João Dória, who supported Bolsonaro in the elections but has been fighting a duel with the president in recent months, posted a message on Twitter including a splinter “I wish President Jair Bolsonaro ready for recovery, diagnosed with covid-19. May he follow the guidelines of medicine and, soon, be restored ”. Another governor, Wilson Witzel, from Rio de Janeiro, wished the president “ready recovery” on his social networks. “I was also hit by Covid-19 and, following medical recommendations, I am sure he will recover soon,” said Witzel.

Fernando Haddad, defeated in the presidential elections that elected Bolsonaro, also left a Tweet: “I am sorry for the more than 1.6 million people infected and for the fact that we have the worst crisis manager in the world among us. I want everyone to recover, including Bolsonaro. To the family of those who left in the middle of the Government’s neglect, my sincere feelings ”. Another candidate in the 2018 presidential elections, Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), took advantage of the same social network to address the government leader, saying “Bolsonaro brought the Unified Health System to the brink of collapse during the pandemic. He dismantled the Ministry of Health and invested in the Office of Hatred (dissemination of false news). Unlike him, the majority of the population does not have the option of resorting to a ‘VIP’ suite in some luxury hospital.

In a more violent style, one of Bolsonaro’s biggest supporters during the campaign, now one of his biggest opponents in the congress, Joice Hasselmann, dubbed the head of state “irresponsible” and called on him to remain isolated from now on. “President Jair Bolsonaro neglected his health, boycotted the use of masks and social isolation. It was irresponsible to him and to others. He has the coronavirus and has certainly infected many others. Now the least you have to do is stay isolated until you heal. Be responsible, President ”, advised the deputy of the PSL.
