U.S. Navy sails in waters claimed by Venezuela

A US Navy ship sailed in an area of the Caribbean Sea that Washington says is abusively claimed by Venezuela, US military sources said today.

The US Navy Nitze mine destroyer “launched an operation for free navigation contesting an excessive maritime claim from Venezuela,” announced the Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) body that directs US military issues in the Caribbean.

According to the United States Navy, the operation takes place in international waters located 12 nautical miles from Venezuela and which are claimed by de facto Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

The North American ship sailed in the waters that Maduro’s “illegitimate regime claims to control wrongly”, the statement said.

A US military spokesman told France Presse that a similar operation will take place last January in the same area.
