Lourenço discusses debt relief with Macron

Angola’s President, João Lourenço, on Monday discussed with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Mácron, the issue of debt relief for African countries and Angola’s interest in joining the initiative, the Angolan presidency said.

According to a note published by the president’s press secretary, the two heads of state discussed, in a telephone conversation, the issue of debt relief for African countries, for which there is an initiative at G-20 level, with a very committed role for France, and Lourenço expressed Angola’s interest in joining the initiative, which he has also done through activities that are being promoted by the finance ministry.

The presidents spoke about other current issues, such as the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the world economy and its repercussions in Angola, and Lourenço reported on the Angolan government’s efforts to confront the virus and highlighted the determined response of the business sector with the help of the state, so that the economy continues to function and, above all, is diversified.

Lourenço and Mácron addressed the political context in the Central African Republic and the climate of instability that has taken hold on the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia.

“The statesmen defended the need to work for the planned elections in the Central African Republic to be held on time and, regarding the moment of border tension between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia, they expressed the hope that the efforts being made by the mediator, President Denis Sassou Nguesso of Congo, will be successful,” the note said.

Mácron had planned to visit Angola in May, but the visit was postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
